Key Takeaways
Jaipur, Feb 5 (NationPress) In a shocking incident from Kothia village, located in the Arwad region of Bhilwara district, thieves committed a heinous act by abducting a 90-year-old woman along with her cot in a desperate attempt to steal her 1.5 kg of silver jewellery amidst the soaring prices of silver.
The assailants subsequently bound her hands and feet and left her abandoned in a field before making their escape.
This incident follows the brutal murder of a woman in Sawai Madhopur, allegedly carried out to steal her silver ornaments, raising serious alarms about the safety of elderly women in rural communities.
As per officials, the robbery in Bhilwara took place on Wednesday night when thieves broke into the residence of former sarpanch Nathi Devi Mali with theft in mind.
Prior to the crime, the culprits confined other family members in their rooms from the outside, effectively holding them hostage.
During the incident, Chhoti Devi, Nathi Devi's elderly mother-in-law, was resting on a cot in the verandah. Observing the heavy silver jewellery she was adorned with, the thieves covered her mouth and lifted her along with the cot, transporting her to a nearby field, where they tied her hands and feet.
Meanwhile, the other family members awoke to find their rooms locked from the outside. They raised an alarm, prompting villagers to arrive and break open the locks. When Chhoti Devi was discovered missing from the house, a search was promptly initiated.
The elderly woman was soon located lying helpless in a field, while the culprits had already fled. Thanks to the swift actions of family members and villagers, the thieves were unable to steal the silver jewellery.
The police arrived at the scene following the report and have commenced a search operation to apprehend the suspects. Ongoing investigations are underway.
Earlier, on Tuesday, a woman was brutally murdered in Kodai village of Sawai Madhopur district. Unidentified assailants allegedly severed her legs with a sharp weapon and fled with the silver anklets she was wearing. The victim was attacked while grazing her goats in a field, resulting in instantaneous death and causing widespread shock in the area.
Investigators suggest that the escalating prices of silver have triggered a surge in crimes targeting women adorned in traditional jewellery, especially in rural settings.
