  • Cultural Sensitivity: The significance of Sindoor is invoked in political discourse.

Kolkata, June 6 (NationPress) A political uproar has ignited in West Bengal following the emergence of a video on social media featuring a Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislator making contentious statements regarding Operation Sindoor.

In the clip, Narendranath Chakraborty, the TMC MLA representing the Pandabeswar constituency in West Burdwan district and the party's district president, is recorded labeling the military operation as a “premeditated spectacle” and “a charade under the guise of warfare.” These comments were allegedly made during a public assembly in Durgapur.

“Operation Sindoor is a meticulously orchestrated performance. A charade has been staged in the name of war, purportedly aimed at Pakistan,” Chakraborty is quoted in the viral footage.

He also expressed skepticism regarding the failure to capture the terrorists responsible for the Pahalgam massacre in Jammu & Kashmir earlier this April, which resulted in the deaths of 26 Indian tourists.

“Why have the perpetrators behind the killings of 26 tourists in Pahalgam not been apprehended yet?” he questioned.

Chakraborty further emphasized the significance of the operation's name, tapping into Bengali cultural sentiments:

“Let’s not forget, Sindoor is integral to Bengali identity. It holds a revered place among women. Those who seek to politicize Sindoor should be discarded like refuse.”

The statements have attracted severe backlash from the BJP. Jitendra Tewari, a former MLA from Pandabeswar and a local BJP figure, criticized Chakraborty’s remarks, labeling them as a reflection of a broader trend within the TMC.

“Such reckless and irresponsible comments are typical of Trinamool Congress leaders. However, the state government will never take action against him as he is a known ally of Anubrata Mondal -- a party heavyweight recently accused of making rape threats against a police officer’s mother and wife. We expect nothing honorable from them,” Tiwari remarked.

This incident is not an isolated one, as TMC leaders have faced scrutiny over Operation Sindoor before. Last month, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also sparked controversy by suggesting that the operation's name was politically charged.

“The term ‘Operation Sindoor’ has been strategically selected to manipulate public sentiment. This is entirely a political maneuver,” Banerjee asserted, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “capitalizing on wartime emotions” for electoral gain.

Point of View

The remarks by TMC MLA Narendranath Chakraborty reflect a troubling trend in political discourse where sensitive issues are leveraged for populism. The need for responsible communication in politics has never been more critical, especially when addressing matters of national security and cultural identity.
