Is a Trinamool Leader Accused of Assaulting a Father and Son in East Burdwan?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 12 (NationPress) A leader from the Trinamool Congress is facing allegations of attacking a father and son and forcing them into a pond in Khandaghosh, located in the East Burdwan district of West Bengal, on Thursday.
Reports suggest that the father was targeted due to his participation in a BJP event. Following the assault, concerns have been raised regarding the lack of immediate action against the Trinamool leader, especially with CCTV footage reportedly documenting the event. A formal complaint has been registered against the TMC leader at the local police station.
As per police sources, approximately 15 to 20 individuals, led by Sheikh Sahad Ali, also known as Lakai, the Trinamool president of Khandaghosh, allegedly assaulted Deepak Adhikari and his son Astik Adhikari before throwing them into a pond. Additionally, Deepak Adhikari's shop suffered extensive damage.
After the incident, the injured father and son were retrieved from the pond and transported to Khandaghosh Block Hospital for medical attention. Subsequently, Deepak Adhikari filed a complaint at the local police station.
Both the father and son asserted that their complaint was initially dismissed by the police. They also claimed to have faced pressure to omit the name of the Trinamool regional president from their complaint. It has been alleged that while submitting a revised complaint, Astik Adhikari, a minor and a Higher Secondary examinee, was removed as a complainant.
The entire incident was claimed to have been captured by CCTV footage.
A senior East Burdwan district police officer stated, “A complaint has been filed concerning the incident. An investigation is underway, and the CCTV footage is being reviewed.”
Notably, Sheikh Lakai has faced several allegations in the past. Recently, he was accused of assaulting businessman Subir Mandal during a late-night incident at his residence in Boaichandi Bazar. In that instance, the police initially refused to file a complaint, only doing so later under orders from a Burdwan court.
Local residents accuse Sheikh Lakai of being linked to the sand mafia, instilling fear among local businesses. The BJP has called for his immediate arrest.
In response to the allegations, the Trinamool regional president denied any wrongdoing, asserting to local reporters, “A brother of businessman Deepak recently passed away. He has some land titled under his wife and son. Deepak has taken possession of it. Deepak's associates assaulted that woman. We intervened to ensure the woman regained her land. The remaining allegations are unfounded.”
Local Trinamool leader Bagbul Islam stated, “The law will take its course. The police are conducting an investigation. Action will certainly be taken against anyone found guilty.”
