Tripura first state to launch 'Track Me' on 112 India App: CM Saha
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Tripura has become the first state in India to activate the 'Track Me' feature within the 112 India mobile application, Chief Minister Manik Saha announced on Thursday, 21 May, saying the initiative is designed to bolster real-time safety for women and elderly citizens across the state. The launch marks a notable step in Tripura's broader push to modernise its policing infrastructure.
What the 'Track Me' Feature Does
The 'Track Me' function, now live on the 112 India emergency-response app, allows users — particularly women and senior citizens — to share their real-time location with the state's emergency response network. Chief Minister Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio, said the feature was formally launched in Tripura for the first time in the country on Thursday. No other state had activated the feature prior to this rollout, according to Saha's statement.
Announcement at Police Passing-Out Parade
Saha made the announcement while addressing the passing-out parade of the 91st and 92nd batches of recruit constables — both men and women — at the KTD Singh Police Training Academy in Narsingarh, on the outskirts of Agartala. He noted that the parade was led by a woman commander, calling it 'a matter of immense pride and joy.'
The Chief Minister highlighted that recruits had received training not only in physical drills but also in legal procedures, jungle warfare, field craft, and disaster management — reflecting an effort to build a multi-skilled police force.
Broader Police Strengthening Measures
Saha announced that appointment letters would soon be issued to 218 Sub-Inspectors in the Tripura Police. He added that the state cabinet has already approved the recruitment of 916 more police constables, with the process currently under way.
He also revealed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had approved a second Indian Reserve (IR) battalion for the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) following a request made approximately eight to nine months ago. The Chief Minister thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Shah for their continued support to Tripura's security infrastructure.
Tripura's Record on Criminal Law Reforms
This comes amid a series of firsts for the northeastern state. Tripura had previously organised the country's first exhibition on the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Hapania International Fair Grounds. The state also secured third position nationally in implementing the new criminal laws that came into effect on 1 July 2024. Tripura Police has additionally been honoured with the President's Colours and recently completed 150 years of service.
Director General of Police Anurag, Principal of KTD Singh Police Training Academy Jayanta Chakraborty, and other senior police officials were present at the ceremony. With the new battalion approval and fresh constable recruitments in the pipeline, Tripura's policing capacity is set to expand further in the coming months.
