Tripura Government Proposes Bill for Retirement Benefits for MLAs Serving One Day

Agartala, Jan 2 (NationPress) A proposed bill will be introduced in the upcoming Winter session of the Tripura Assembly to amend the prevailing legislation, allowing retirement benefits to MLAs who have served for as little as one day, officials disclosed on Thursday.
The Winter session of the Tripura Assembly is set to commence on January 10 and will run for three days.
A senior official from the Assembly mentioned that if a member simply takes the oath and serves one day as an MLA, they would be eligible for retirement benefits such as pension and housing loans.
As per the latest amendment in 2022 to the Salaries, Allowances, Pensions and Other Benefits of the Ministers, Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Leader of Opposition, Chief Whip, and MLA Act, an MLA would qualify for retirement benefits, including a pension, only if they served as a member of the Assembly for a minimum of four-and-a-half years.
The official informed IANS that the salary, allowances, pensions, and family pensions of Ministers, sitting MLAs, and former MLAs would see an increase under the proposed legislation.
Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath stated that three significant bills, including the amendment to provide retirement benefits to MLAs, will be tabled.
He added that the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) reached a unanimous decision on Wednesday to hold the three-day winter session starting January 10.
During the first day of the session, Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu will deliver his customary address to the assembly.
"In his address, the Governor will emphasize the performance and vision of the state government," the minister informed the media.
