Will Tripura Schools Remain Closed Until January 10 Due to Severe Cold Wave?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Agartala, Jan 5 (NationPress) - Due to the ongoing cold wave conditions, all schools in Tripura will be closed until January 10, as confirmed by officials on Monday.
Chief Minister Manik Saha, overseeing both Elementary and Secondary Education, announced this decision via a Facebook update, stating: "It has been resolved to keep all schools (including government, government-aided, and privately managed institutions) closed from January 6 to January 10, 2026, due to severe cold weather conditions."
The Chief Minister had previously indicated that he would evaluate the winter vacation schedule, considering the cold wave situation before making a decision.
A senior official from the Education Department reported that the closure of schools ranging from kindergarten to Class XII was prompted by a special advisory from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which cautioned about cold wave conditions impacting various parts of the state in the coming days.
In a formal notification, Rajib Datta, Additional Secretary of the Education (Schools) Department, stated that all government, government-aided, and private schools under its jurisdiction would remain shut from January 6 to January 10 due to current severe cold weather conditions.
“All District Education Officers are instructed to inform every school within their respective areas about this decision,” the notification emphasized.
Tripura has a total of 4,915 schools, spanning from primary to higher secondary levels, accommodating around 6.80 lakh students.
The IMD indicated that temperatures in the region range between 22 degrees Celsius and 8 degrees Celsius, which are 3 to 4 degrees below the usual averages.
“The cold wave conditions are expected to persist until January 10,” according to the IMD report.
The Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) had previously declared the closure of all educational institutions under its governance. An official order from the TTAADC Education Department specified that schools under the autonomous council would remain closed from January 3 to January 13 due to extreme cold.
Nonetheless, practical exams for Class X and Class XII students will proceed as scheduled. This decision has provided relief for parents, particularly those with younger children, as concerns over health due to prolonged exposure to cold mornings and harsh winds have intensified.
Parents have expressed that it has become increasingly challenging to send their children to school early in the morning under the current cold conditions.
