New Delhi, February 4 (NationPress) Philemon Yang, the President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), is scheduled to begin an official visit to India from February 4 to February 8 at the request of the Indian Government.
This visit aims to bolster bilateral ties and enhance multilateral collaboration on critical global matters such as international peace, security, and the 'Pact for the Future'.
Yang's itinerary includes stops in New Delhi and Bengaluru, the latter often dubbed the Silicon Valley of India.
During his time in India, Yang plans to participate in high-level talks, including a courtesy meeting with President Droupadi Murmu and discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
Additionally, he will engage with the UN Country Team in India, led by UN Resident Coordinator Shombi Sharp.
Beyond diplomatic meetings, President Yang will also tour a public health facility in Gautam Buddha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh.
In Bengaluru, he is anticipated to visit significant institutions like the Infosys campus and the Indian Institute of Science, along with other notable sites in both cities.
Prior to his India trip, President Yang completed an official visit to Japan from January 31 to February 4.
While in Tokyo, he met with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, and JICA President Akihiko Tanaka.
He also honored the victims of the Hiroshima atomic bombing by laying a wreath at the cenotaph.
Originating from the Republic of Cameroon, Philemon Yang formerly held the position of the country's Prime Minister.
In June 2024, he was elected as the President of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly. His term began in September 2024 and will extend until September 2025.
This visit to India is anticipated to further enhance India's partnership with the UN and support global initiatives addressing urgent international challenges.
