Chandigarh, March 5 (NationPress) In a significant setback to cross-border smuggling during the ongoing 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' (war against drugs) campaign, the Amritsar Rural Police seized a 23 kg heroin shipment from Devi Daspura village in Jandiala.

Providing insights, Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav stated on Wednesday that initial investigations suggest the shipment is connected to a smuggling ring run by a US-based trafficker named Jasmit Singh, also known as Lucky.

The suspect Sahilpreet Singh, who goes by Karan and hails from Devi Daspura, is currently on the run, with multiple police teams actively pursuing his capture.

The DGP mentioned that ongoing investigations are aimed at identifying both the upstream and downstream connections within the smuggling operation.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Border Range) Satinder Singh, along with Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Maninder Singh, held a press conference where they indicated that police units at a checkpoint received intel suggesting that Sahilpreet Singh had collected a heroin shipment from across the border.

Responding quickly, Jandiala police teams conducted an intelligence-driven operation, resulting in the recovery of 23 packets of heroin, each weighing one kg, stowed in a jute bag from a specified location in Devi Daspura.

The investigation revealed that Sahilpreet was in direct communication with Jasmit Singh, who orchestrated the shipment.

Reports indicate that Jasmit Singh has a criminal history, with charges related to the Arms Act and attempts to commit murder against him.

The Deputy Inspector General noted that police efforts are underway to apprehend the fugitive Sahilpreet, alias Karan.

On February 28, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann declared a campaign against the drug crisis, directing law enforcement leaders to achieve a drug-free state within three months.

He announced the establishment of special courts to ensure the swift prosecution of drug cases and guarantee the conviction of offenders.

CM Mann emphasized the long-standing tradition of Punjab Police in managing challenging law and order scenarios and expressed hope that the force would continue this legacy, aiming for a drug-free state with public support.

He reassured that there would be no shortage of funding and pledged full cooperation to the police and civil administration in this endeavor.
