New Delhi, March 27 (NationPress) Criticizing the intertwining of religion and politics, Robert Vadra, spouse of Congress general secretary and MP Priyanka Gandhi, stated on Thursday that Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi should not be criticized simply for not participating in the sacred dip at the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj.
“We don’t endorse media displays or appearances… our belief lies in prayers,” Vadra told IANS, referencing his own pilgrimage experiences and interactions with individuals from various faiths, during which he avoids media attention.
“If we attend the Mahakumbh, it could lead to disruptions and inconvenience for other pilgrims due to VIP arrangements... we can visit anytime. We are not interested in public displays. Our secularism does not require showcasing,” he remarked.
He further expressed, “We should refrain from performing religious acts merely for publicity or engaging in politics centered around showmanship.”
“Thus, I believe Rahul Gandhi chooses not to visit religious sites for public display. He can visit any sacred location whenever he deems fit, ensuring there is no inconvenience to others,” he added.
Commenting on the restrictions imposed by the Sambhal district administration in Uttar Pradesh regarding offering namaaz on roads or rooftops, Vadra stated: "In times of trouble, individuals turn to their God, not any minister, as no minister will be there at that moment. Those who visit temples or mosques recall their hardships and pray for relief from their troubles."
Vadra criticized the BJP's religiously charged politics, stating that dividing people along religious lines by prohibiting namaaz or closing meat shops, or altering place names associated with Aurangzeb is detrimental. Such politics will hinder progress and foster division, he asserted.
He concluded with a remark on the rhetoric of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, saying, "If any Chief Minister holds such beliefs, then we are unlikely to advance."
