New Delhi, March 27 (NationPress) In the first remarks from a member of the Gandhi family regarding the decorum concerns raised by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla about Rahul Gandhi, Robert Vadra, the spouse of Priyanka Gandhi, stated on Thursday that there was nothing inappropriate about the Leader of Opposition warmly greeting his sister.
“Rahul Gandhi met his sister in Parliament. He greeted her with affection. There is nothing wrong with that… both brother and sister share a wonderful bond, and they have learned from their family to greet others with love, respect, and happiness,” Vadra told IANS, labeling the Speaker’s decision to adjourn the House after the incident as unjust and an effort to silence the LoP.
Rahul Gandhi’s affectionate gesture towards his sister Priyanka Gandhi reportedly made some members uncomfortable, which led Birla to remind everyone about maintaining decorum as outlined in Rule 349 and subsequently adjourn the House.
The Speaker emphasized that members must uphold decorum within the chamber.
“I have observed several instances where the behavior of members does not meet the esteemed standards of this House. This House has witnessed father-daughter, mother-daughter, and husband-wife as members. In this light, I expect the Leader of the Opposition to conduct himself in accordance with Rule 349,” the Speaker stated.
Vadra condemned the perceived suppression of Rahul Gandhi's voice and supported his assertion that the Speaker was managing the House in a “undemocratic manner”, denying him the chance to speak.
He expressed that he and the public firmly believe that Rahul Gandhi addresses the most pressing issues, echoing the sentiments of the masses.
“Rahul should not be obstructed from speaking in Parliament,” he asserted.
Referring to the Rahul-Priyanka interaction as a reflection of the Congress tradition of honoring and nurturing relationships, Vadra criticized the BJP for damaging its own relationships.
He also mentioned the efforts he and Priyanka Gandhi have made to strengthen their relationship and marriage, criticizing the BJP as a poor partner.
Discussing the prospect of entering active politics, Vadra remarked, “I will do so with my family’s blessings when the time is right.”
He noted that even outside of active politics, he remains dedicated to serving the public and behaves appropriately due to his connection with the Gandhi family.
In response to political attacks against him, Vadra said, “I have always believed that I could respond more effectively to them if I were an MP myself.”
