Is the Upcoming Varanasi Ropeway Video Misleading?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 6 (NationPress) The Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry has issued a statement on Tuesday, labeling a social media video showcasing a swinging gondola of the upcoming Varanasi Ropeway as 'misleading.' The video raised concerns among the public, who inferred that the gondola's swaying indicated safety issues. Although the service is not yet operational, the video sparked anxiety among citizens.
In response to the misinformation spread by a user on social media, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) clarified, 'The swing observed in the video is part of the testing process to ensure compliance with safety norms.'
The PIB further stated, 'The sway observed in the circulated video is within the permissible limits defined by the CEN standards and has been taken into account during the system’s design.' This statement counters claims made by the video creator that the over ₹800 crore invested in the 3.85 km ropeway in Varanasi was wasted.
Expounding on the movements of the gondola depicted in the video, the official statement emphasized, 'Emergency brakes have been applied during testing conducted by the OEM team to assess maximum longitudinal sway as per permissible limits.'
These swinging movements are managed by a spring-loaded support system of the gondola, which minimizes sway within the prescribed limits set by applicable codes and standards, including CEN and BIS.
The statement affirmed that the flexibility in the suspension system is a deliberate design feature aimed at accommodating dynamic operational forces, wind loads, and acceleration-deceleration effects encountered during the ropeway's regular operation and halts.
The gondola's swing does not signify any structural, mechanical, or operational flaws but is vital for ensuring passenger safety under all conditions during operations.
The ropeway aims to link Varanasi Cantonment Railway Station with Godowlia, reducing travel time from approximately 45 minutes to just 15 minutes. It is anticipated to be launched in May this year.
