Will Most White-Collar Jobs Be Automated Within 12-18 Months?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 13 (NationPress) The head of artificial intelligence at Microsoft, Mustafa Suleyman, has issued a caution that a majority of white-collar jobs that depend on computers may be fully automated in the upcoming 12 to 18 months.
Suleyman revealed that Microsoft is working on a “professional-grade AGI” that could automate many tasks currently performed by lawyers, accountants, project managers, and marketers.
In a discussion with the Financial Times, he indicated that Microsoft is hurrying to create “professional-grade AGI”, which are AI systems designed to handle nearly all tasks that human professionals undertake. He emphasized that the present transformation in the AI sector will extend beyond simple productivity improvements, leading to significant changes in knowledge-based occupations.
“Most of the tasks associated with white-collar positions, whether as a lawyer, accountant, project manager, or marketing professional, will be completely automated by an AI within the next 12 to 18 months,” Suleyman noted, according to the report.
He also discussed Microsoft's plan to capture a larger portion of the enterprise market by automating routine and repetitive duties like document drafting, data analysis, and project coordination that presently require skilled workers.
He mentioned that Microsoft aims to boost AI model production to lessen its dependency on OpenAI, following a revised agreement between the two entities.
Additionally, Suleyman stated, “creating a new model will be as easy as producing a podcast or writing a blog,” suggesting that both institutions and individuals could create AI solutions tailored to their specific needs.
The tech giant Oracle is planning to cut between 20,000 and 30,000 positions to enhance its AI data-center capacity, while Amazon recently announced a layoff of 16,000 employees as part of its AI restructuring strategy.
A recent report from PwC India indicated that artificial intelligence could contribute nearly $550 billion to India's economy by 2035, across five key sectors including agriculture, education, energy, healthcare, and manufacturing.
The India AI Mission, which was launched in 2024 with a funding of $1.2 billion, aims to democratize access to computing resources, datasets, and talent development.
