Google Partners with NCERT to Launch YouTube Channels in 29 Languages Across India

New Delhi, Dec 9 (NationPress) Tech giant Google announced on Monday a collaboration with the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) aimed at delivering quality education to the remote areas of India.

As part of this collaboration, NCERT will introduce several YouTube channels that will be in sync with the curriculum for grades 1 through 12 over the next few months.

The channels will feature educational content in 29 Indian languages, including Indian Sign Language, designed to provide engaging and accessible learning materials, thereby empowering students, parents, and teachers nationwide.

“Learning has always been central to YouTube. In India, where accessible education is vital for unleashing the nation's potential, YouTube can facilitate the accessibility of learning materials through innovative partnerships, tools, and resources,” stated Jonathan Katzman, Director of Product Management for YouTube Learning in a Google blog post.

Additionally, Google has announced a partnership with the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning to launch Credentialled Courses.

NPTEL now provides 50 credentialed courses encompassing a wide array of subjects, from pure sciences and literature to sports psychology and rocket propulsion.

“This initiative creates an opportunity for anyone outside the IIT system to enroll in a course on NPTEL’s YouTube channels, complete the online certification on the NPTEL-SWAYAM portal, and receive a certificate from the IITs,” Katzman mentioned, noting that more courses will be added in the upcoming months.

YouTube, owned by Google, initially rolled out courses in India in 2022 to assist creators in providing a structured learning experience. In 2024, the company aims to empower even more creators to develop and share courses, broadening their reach and enhancing their impact on learners.

Furthermore, to improve understanding, they have introduced “Key Concepts.”

“By utilizing AI, we pinpoint concepts discussed in a video and may provide definitions sourced from the web for those concepts, across subjects like biology, physics, and chemistry. We present definitions and images from Google’s Knowledge Graph, based on the video’s transcript and related video metadata,” Katzman added.

The video-sharing platform has also rolled out Quizzes to assist learners in applying their knowledge. Its YouTube Player for Education is a product tailored for learners, enhancing the presentation of YouTube videos in popular educational tools.

“Our partners are employing the YouTube Player for Education to create varied learning experiences, including interactive lessons, supplementary study, and formative assessments. In India, Google Classroom and edtech platforms like Quizizz and Teachmint have incorporated this player into their tools, which is being utilized in classrooms globally,” Katzman stated.

Earlier this year, YouTube unveiled the AI Skills House program, granting access to Google’s leading AI courses on YouTube, such as Introduction to Generative AI, Introduction to Responsible AI, and Introduction to Large Language Models. These courses, which will soon be available at no charge in 7 Indian languages, are set to expand their reach.
