Enhanced Fishing Efficiency and Nutrition in Car Nicobar Through GPS Technology
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 3 (NationPress) The implementation of Global Positioning System devices among fishers in Car Nicobar has significantly enhanced their fishing efficiency, ensuring a consistent supply of fish and better nutrition for the local population, as reported by the government on Tuesday.
A dedicated Coastal Fisheries Information Hub has been set up on Car Nicobar Island, providing five GPS devices to local tribal fishermen, with an additional five available for communal use, according to official sources.
This initiative has resulted in a remarkable increase in daily catch volume, with fishermen experiencing an average rise of around 168 percent, all while spending less time at sea, as stated by the Ministry of Science & Technology.
The enhancement in fishing yield is attributed to improved navigation and the ability to identify productive fishing grounds. The ministry cited examples of beneficiaries such as Junaid from Teetop village and Abdul Sattar from Chuchucha village, who have started selling their catches in local markets, thereby boosting their incomes since the introduction of these devices on the island.
The statement noted, "The lifestyle and livelihood of the Nicobarese communities have traditionally revolved around fishing techniques developed through experience. However, these practices have been limited by unpredictable sea conditions and a lack of accurate navigation tools. Weather disturbances often result in lost boats, leading to decreased productivity and, at times, putting lives at risk."
To address these challenges, the Central Island Technological Research Institute has tailored GPS devices for use in the local fishing environment under the SEED Division programme of the Department of Science and Technology (DST).
Fishermen received training on navigating with GPS and modern fishing methods to maximize the benefits of these devices. Surveys were conducted to identify the needs and challenges faced by fishermen, facilitating the adoption of this technology, which was promoted through the Tribal Council.
