New Delhi, Mar 1 (NationPress) India needs regulation and awareness regarding junk food to address the issue of obesity, stated Luke Coutinho, a holistic health coach. He commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts in tackling this critical health challenge within the nation.
“Prime Minister Modi is absolutely correct in his vision to tackle the obesity crisis,” Coutinho remarked during his visit to an Anganwadi Centre in New Delhi.
“It’s essential to establish regulation and enhance awareness about junk food consumption among both children and adults, as this is significantly contributing to the obesity epidemic,” he emphasized. He also mentioned that nutrition education needs to commence early, and such education should be delivered in various regional languages.
Coutinho further highlighted the importance of increasing access to local superfoods such as millet. “Modi has urged us to incorporate local superfoods into our diets. By doing so, we can maintain a balanced diet that supports the necessary macros of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats,” said Coutinho, who is also the co-founder of Luke Coutinho Holistic Healing Systems.
During the 119th episode of 'Mann Ki Baat', PM Modi addressed the growing issue of obesity and its potential to lead to serious health conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and cancer. A recent study indicates that one in every eight individuals currently faces obesity.
“Obesity cases have doubled over the years, with an alarming fourfold increase among children. According to WHO data, in 2022, approximately 2.5 billion people worldwide were classified as overweight,” the PM noted.
He recommended a 10 percent reduction in the consumption of edible oils.
While supporting the mission against obesity, he urged, “Every individual must take personal responsibility as an Indian citizen to contribute to this cause by making healthier food choices, exercising daily, and focusing on our mental and emotional well-being.”
Coutinho concluded by stating, “We need greater awareness and mindfulness, promoting Ghar-ka-khana (home-cooked meals) to ensure a healthier India.
