Bangladesh's Chief Selector Raises Concerns Over Litton Das' White-Ball Performance

Dhaka, Dec 16 (NationPress) The chief selector of Bangladesh, Gazi Ashraf Hossain, has voiced his worries regarding Litton Das' recent difficulties in white-ball cricket, indicating that a break might be arranged for him if necessary. Litton's performance has been lackluster during the series against the West Indies, where he managed scores of just 2, 4, and 0 in the three ODIs. His struggles continued into the T20I series as he failed to make any runs in the first match, although Bangladesh clinched a narrow seven-run victory.

“We recognize that there are significant expectations from Litton due to his caliber as a batter. However, his consistency in white-ball cricket has been lacking. This is why he was excluded from the playing XI in a crucial match of a tournament,” Cricbuzz quoted Ashraf.

“At present, he serves as our T20 captain during an ongoing series. It isn't the best time to probe deeply into these issues. Nevertheless, we are indeed worried about his recent dismissals. If any adjustments are required in his batting moving forward, our coaches are available to assist him. Alternatively, if he needs some time off, that can be organized. He might also stage a comeback in the upcoming two matches,” he added.

Ashraf expressed his astonishment that Litton, despite his poor form, was appointed captain in the absence of the regular skipper Najmul Hossain, who is currently injured.

“While the selection of the national team is under our authority, the decision regarding who will captain the team is the board's responsibility. Whether it's a temporary or long-term decision, the board makes this determination based on the prevailing circumstances. This was the case this time as well. After I took over, I was asked to suggest captains and vice-captains only for the 'A' team and the High-Performance team, not for the national team,” stated Ashraf.

“As the head of the selection panel, I am speaking from my professional standpoint, which entails certain responsibilities and ethics. Beyond that, I cannot comment further at this stage. The board likely made a decision based on some immediate considerations. The board did not have many alternatives either, as several players were injured,” he continued.

He also seemed unsure about the futures of Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan concerning their participation in the Champions Trophy. Shakib has encountered difficulties, including political barriers preventing his entry into the country and scrutiny regarding his bowling action, which now requires clearance for him to bowl in both international and domestic cricket.

Meanwhile, Tamim has started preparing for the upcoming BPL through the ongoing NCL T20, where he has already scored two half-centuries, showcasing his readiness despite a seven-month absence from the sport.

“I do not have clear answers to specific questions. Regarding Shakib Al Hasan's situation, you are all already informed. I cannot make any definitive statements about that. The communication with Shakib is managed through Cricket Operations. As for Tamim Iqbal, he has resumed playing, which is a positive sign. I believe we will soon find out whether he will be available or not. If he is, that would be fantastic,” Ashraf mentioned.

“This is a completely different matter compared to Shakib's case. In Tamim's situation, if someone opts out, as you know, there was a previous board with differing opinions and numerous issues. However, under this board, a positive aspect is that Tamim is returning to the field and getting ready for a significant tournament. We are in a position to discuss matters with him.

“The board and the selectors will meet to find a resolution. Tamim needs to enhance his fitness further. When a player has been active for so long, they understand how to refine and prepare themselves for the global stage. Whatever assistance he requires, the board will provide. This should not pose an issue,” he concluded.
