Gakpo Expresses Joy After Concluding a ‘Significant Week’ with Victory Over Madrid and City

Liverpool, Dec 2 (NationPress) Liverpool dispelled any lingering doubts about their season's initiation with a convincing 2-0 victory against Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday. This success was preceded by a home victory in the Champions League by the same margin against Real Madrid.

The Reds have enjoyed an impressive start under Arne Slot, accumulating 18 wins, one draw, and a single defeat this season, placing them at the top of both the Premier League and Champions League standings.

The win against City expanded their domestic lead to nine points, secured through an early goal from Gakpo and a late penalty from Mohamed Salah.

“Yeah, I think (it has been) a big week. Big games, even the first one against Southampton after the internationals. It always is tricky after the internationals, but we got the big win there and then Madrid and City, two very crucial games in the Champions League and the league, and I felt everybody recognized how significant that was so yeah, very happy,” Gakpo shared with Liverpoolfc.com.

The Netherlands international's goal came during a first 20 minutes filled with relentless pressure from Liverpool, and he added, “I think we started off very aggressive [and] very well. Maybe we could have scored more, but in the end, we did well, so yeah, very pleased with the first half.

“In the second half, they played a bit better. They were also more dominant at times, but we defended well as a team, and then in the end, we earned the penalty for the second one, sealing the game. We executed our game plan effectively.

“In any match against a strong opponent like City, there will be moments where you find yourself slightly back in your own half because they are proficient with the ball. They had their moments, especially during a 20-minute spell when they played very composed and attempted to create several chances around our box,” he noted.

December promises to be busy with nine matches across three competitions, so there is little time for Gakpo and his teammates to relish another outstanding performance.

Next up are two consecutive away matches, starting with Newcastle United at St. James' Park on Wednesday night, followed by a Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.
