New Delhi, July 24 (NationPress) With a clear vision set on the 2036 Summer Olympics, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) announced the initiation of Mission 2036 aimed at establishing India as a dominant force in sports by the time the Olympic Games are hosted in the nation.

The leadership of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), led by President P. T. Usha, unveiled Mission 2036 during a press conference held on Thursday.

"Our long-term objective is to transform India into a sporting powerhouse. This aligns with our commitment to drive India's sporting ambitions through Mission 2036. We are also focused on securing the opportunity to host the Olympics in India in 2036," Usha stated at the conference.

In October 2023, during the IOC Annual Session in Mumbai, Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly declared India's intent to bid for the 2036 Olympic Games, with Ahmedabad proposed as the host city.

Usha and her colleagues on the IOA executive committee have been engaged in ongoing discussions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as part of the bidding process for the 2036 Olympics.

"Our dedication is to achieve global excellence in sports, and we have embraced this mission to realize that vision. As Prime Minister Modi has highlighted, youth and sports are essential for India's future, and empowered athletes symbolize a strong nation. This compelling message is the foundation of our mission to turn this vision into reality. We will collaborate to establish a robust and sustainable framework for sporting excellence," explained Usha, a legendary sprinter who still holds the record for the most medals by an Indian in individual events at the Asian Games, achieving four golds and one silver in the 1986 edition in Seoul, South Korea.

Usha emphasized that under the Mission 2026 strategy, the IOA is also dedicated to fostering inclusivity and gender equality in Indian sports.

"We are committed to creating an inclusive environment for women, young athletes, individuals from tribal areas, and every Indian aspiring to excel in sports," Usha remarked.

Meanwhile, IOA Joint Secretary Kalyan Choubay stated that the association envisions doing everything necessary for athlete development.

"It is the IOA's goal that India excels in sports, and we will take all necessary steps to ensure athlete development through good governance, improved infrastructure, and well-informed athletes regarding anti-doping regulations.

"The vision of the IOA is to establish India as a formidable presence in sports, and we will pursue this with unwavering determination. Achieving this will involve athlete development, effective governance, enhanced infrastructure, and educating athletes on anti-doping practices, alongside providing the National Anti-Doping Authority (NADA) with more resources to conduct additional sessions and facilitate improved cooperation among all stakeholders, including state and central governments, and National Sports Federations," Choubay explained.
