New Delhi, Aug 14 (NationPress) In a significant milestone for the indigenous sport, players from the Indian men’s and women’s teams that triumphed in the Kho Kho World Cup have been invited as esteemed guests to the 79th Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort. This invitation is historic as it marks the inaugural participation of Kho Kho players in India’s Independence Day ceremony.
Earlier this year, both Indian teams made remarkable history by securing the men’s and women’s championships at the inaugural Kho Kho World Cup, which took place at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium from January 13 to 19, 2025. The tournament featured a total of 39 teams (20 men’s and 19 women’s) from 23 countries across six continents.
On August 15, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation from the iconic Red Fort. This year’s celebrations are set to welcome approximately 5,000 special guests from various fields including sports, innovation, and community leadership.
“This is a tremendous boost for the indigenous sport of Kho Kho. I have only witnessed Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations through the screen, and this is the first occasion I will join my teammates in person. It’s an incredible feeling,” expressed Nirmala Bhati, a member of the World Cup-winning women’s team.
“We are all thrilled that Kho Kho players have received an invitation for the first time. It’s a moment of pride for all of us, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to KKFI president Sudhanshu Mittal and M.S. Tyagi for their steadfast support,” stated Pratik Waikar, captain of the victorious men’s team.
“This is a privilege and honor for the Kho Kho sport. The journey of these athletes embodies dedication, perseverance, and passion. They have overcome numerous challenges to shape their destinies, and this invitation truly acknowledges the sport’s rising prominence,” remarked the KKFI chief.
Congratulating the athletes, the Chairman of Administration & Organisation at KKFI stated, “When our players stand in reverence for the National Anthem at the Red Fort, it will be a moment of immense pride for the entire Kho Kho community. We are grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya for recognizing and honoring the ‘Jaabaaz’ players of Bharatiya Khel.”
This landmark invitation serves as a symbolic recognition of Kho Kho’s increasing prominence in the nation’s sporting arena, reaffirming the government’s dedication to promoting India’s indigenous sports on both national and global stages.
