Harare, July 18 (NationPress) Batting all-rounder Glenn Phillips has been removed from New Zealand’s roster for the current men’s T20I tri-series in Zimbabwe due to a right groin injury.
New Zealand Cricket (NZC) announced on Friday that Phillips sustained the injury during the Major League Cricket (MLC) final between MI New York and Washington Freedom. Following an assessment upon his arrival in Zimbabwe, it was concluded that he would need several weeks for rehabilitation.
Tim Robinson, who had joined the squad as a substitute for players engaged in the MLC final, will now remain with the team for the remainder of the T20I tri-series. Robinson contributed a significant 75 not out in New Zealand’s 21-run victory over South Africa in the match on July 16.
“It’s certainly disappointing to lose a player of Glenn’s quality. Much like Finn, we feel for Glenn and regret that he misses this series. He was eager to play for the BLACKCAPS, and unfortunately, he won’t have that chance. We know he’ll work diligently to return, and I look forward to that moment,” stated head coach Rob Walter in a statement.
NZC also mentioned that a replacement for Phillips in the Test squad for the Zimbabwe series will be announced soon. For now, Phillips will head back to New Zealand alongside Mitch Hay and Jimmy Neesham, who were also brought in as cover.
This is not the first time a right groin injury has sidelined Phillips, as he was previously ruled out of the IPL 2025 while playing as a substitute fielder for the Gujarat Titans.
Updated New Zealand squad: Mitch Santner (captain), Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes, Matt Henry, Bevon Jacobs, Adam Milne, Daryl Mitchell, Will O’Rourke, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Tim Seifert, Ish Sodhi, Devon Conway, and Tim Robinson.
