New Delhi, April 3 (NationPress) Former England cricket star Kevin Pietersen has made his early forecast regarding the four teams likely to secure playoff spots in the current Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. This prediction follows his observations from the initial round of matches, in which each franchise played at least once.

The ex-mentor of Delhi Capitals believes that the Mumbai Indians (MI), Delhi Capitals (DC), Rajasthan Royals (RR), and Punjab Kings (PBKS) may compete against one another in the playoffs, although he cautioned that injuries could alter these standings.

"Based on the first set of matches I've observed in this IPL season, these could potentially be the top four: MI, DC, RR, and PBKS. However, injuries and other factors could significantly shift this outlook," Pietersen remarked in a post on X.

A notable omission from his playoff predictions is the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who commenced their campaign with a commanding victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Pietersen cited concerns regarding RCB's middle-order performance and Hazlewood's fitness as reasons for leaving the 2025 champions out of his predictions.

"I’m worried about RCB’s performance in the middle overs and the condition of their spinners, particularly Hazlewood. Remember, it’s bowlers who clinch championships," he added in another post on X.

Pietersen also remarked that no target seems secure this season, noting that both RCB and MI have successfully chased totals exceeding 200. He emphasized the significance of the toss in this year's matches.

"The intriguing aspect this season is that batters are uncertain about how aggressively to approach the first innings. What constitutes a strong score? Can you consistently win when batting first?"

"The toss has become as crucial as your entire team!" he continued.

According to the 45-year-old, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) need to implement substantial changes to be viewed as title contenders.

"They would need to undergo significant transformations for me to regard CSK, SRH, or KKR as serious title challengers," he stated in another post on X.

Currently, after six matches, the Rajasthan Royals are leading the points table with an impressive net run rate of 4.171, while RCB occupies the second spot. The Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians each have two points following their opening match victories. Hyderabad also registered their first points after defeating KKR in their second match.
