PM Modi Expresses Grief Over the Loss of Indian Squash Icon Raj Manchanda

New Delhi, Dec 4 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed his sorrow over the loss of Raj Manchanda, the esteemed squash player from India, who departed this world at the age of 79.

Raj Manchanda, a recipient of the Arjuna Award and a six-time national champion, passed away on Sunday, as reported by his family.

PM Modi shared on social media, saying: "I am deeply saddened by the loss of Shri Raj Manchanda Ji, a true icon of Indian squash celebrated for his passion and excellence. Apart from his numerous accolades, it was his fervor for the sport and his role as an inspiration for countless individuals that made him exceptional."

"His contributions went beyond the squash court, as he also served our nation through his military service. My heartfelt condolences to his family and fans. Om Shanti," he added in his message of condolence.

For five consecutive years, from 1977 to 1982, Raj Manchanda was the undisputed champion of the Indian squash scene, a period during which no one could rival his sporting prowess.

He represented India in various prestigious tournaments, including the Asian Championships, where he faced and defeated some of the most formidable players in the sport.

In 1981, he went head-to-head with Jahangir Khan from Pakistan, another squash legend, in the Asian Championships.

His journey to fame began in his early 30s when he clinched his first national title, leading the Electrical and Mechanical Engineer Corps (EME) of the Indian Army. He received the Arjuna Award in 1983.

Manchanda led the Indian team on several occasions, securing a silver medal at the 1981 Asian Team Championships held in Karachi.

Under his leadership, the Indian squash team achieved a bronze medal at the Asian Championship in Jordan in 1984.
