New Delhi, April 21 (NationPress) Gujarat Titans spinner Rashid Khan praised the leadership skills of his captain Shubman Gill, after their impressive start to the IPL 2025 season.

GT is currently at the top of the points table with 10 points from seven matches after their victory against Delhi Capitals in Ahmedabad on Saturday.

“Shubman is destined for a bright future as a leader, not only because of his batting but also due to his understanding of the game. He always comes prepared with a strategy. He remains calm, and his ability to manage the team, bowlers, and the overall atmosphere on the field indicates that he possesses all the traits of a great leader.

“Captaining in such a prestigious league carries immense pressure, often surpassing that of the World Cup. This is an ideal opportunity for him to showcase his leadership under pressure and make courageous decisions,” Rashid stated on JioHotstar’s 'Gen Gold' series.

Discussing his experience with Gujarat Titans, the Afghanistan star noted that the franchise fosters a family-like environment. “Since joining the team, the coaching staff and players have embraced me warmly. I never felt as if I had previously played for another team for five years. This familial atmosphere has allowed me to enjoy the game much more. My performance has improved, and I’ve received more opportunities, even with the bat. It’s crucial to have responsibilities and open discussions within a team,” he explained.

Rashid mentioned that leading the side during Hardik Pandya's absence in the 2022 season was a significant milestone for him, prompting him to think differently.

“One of my most memorable moments was captaining Gujarat Titans when Hardik Pandya was unwell during our debut season in the IPL. It was a dream come true. That experience not only helped me grow in the league but also prepared me for leading Afghanistan. My perspective began to shift,” he remarked.

“Compared to 4–5 years ago, my mindset has evolved. That leadership experience contributed to Afghanistan reaching the semi-finals in 2024. The IPL exposes players to various conditions and situations that enhance their leadership and playing abilities,” the spinner added.

Although Rashid is having a quieter season with four wickets in seven matches, he remains focused on executing his skills to pressure the batters.

“My strategy is consistently to concentrate on my skills and strengths, bowling in effective areas. Whether or not I take a wicket is secondary; by applying pressure from one end, wickets are likely to follow from the other. If a batter plays defensively, I’ll intensify my attack and adjust field placements to provoke big shots. If the pitch provides assistance, even defensive play can create opportunities,” he stated.

“If the wicket offers no assistance, I aim to complete my four overs with less than 25 runs conceded. Ultimately, restricting runs benefits the team and creates chances for other bowlers, even if I don’t take wickets,” Rashid concluded.

Gujarat Titans will face Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Monday.
