Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 18 (NationPress) The Sunrisers Hyderabad have signed Gerald Coetzee to replace David Payne, who is out for the rest of the IPL 2026 season due to an ankle injury.
The franchise announced this decision in an official statement on Saturday, following Payne's injury which has ruled him out after he played two matches this season, taking two wickets.
According to the league's statement, "Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have brought in Gerald Coetzee as a replacement for David Payne for the remainder of TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Payne, who participated in 2 games for SRH this season and took 2 wickets, is sidelined due to an ankle injury."
Coetzee, a right-arm fast bowler, boasts impressive experience, having represented the South Africa national cricket team in all formats. At just 24 years old, he has participated in four Tests, 14 ODIs, and 18 T20Is, accumulating a total of 67 international wickets.
Although Coetzee went unsold in this year's auction, he has prior IPL experience with the Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans, where he claimed 15 wickets across 14 matches.
Although the 25-year-old was included in South Africa's squad for the T20 World Cup, he did not play any matches. Post-tournament, he was active in all five T20Is against New Zealand. Coetzee's transfer to Sunrisers Hyderabad is set for a fee of INR 2 crore.
In another positive development for SRH, captain Pat Cummins joined the squad on April 17 and is anticipated to participate in their match against the Rajasthan Royals on April 25. Currently, SRH sits fifth in the points table and is scheduled to face the Chennai Super Kings later on April 18.
Coetzee's aggressive bowling style and pace will undoubtedly enhance SRH’s bowling lineup as they aim to fortify their position in the latter stages of the tournament.
The South African fast bowler will join the Hyderabad franchise as a direct pace replacement for Payne following his unfortunate injury.
