Delhi Police gunfight in Rohini: 2 criminals shot, juvenile held
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Two alleged criminals were shot and arrested, and a juvenile was apprehended after a gunfight broke out between the Delhi Police Special Staff and a group of suspects in Rohini Sector 24, New Delhi, on Wednesday, 9 September. The two adults, identified as Deepak and Nitik, sustained gunshot injuries to their legs during the exchange of fire and were subsequently shifted to a hospital for treatment.
How the Encounter Unfolded
The Special Staff team of Rohini had received prior intelligence that three individuals — travelling together on a motorcycle — were moving through the Sector 24 area with the intent to commit a crime. Acting on this tip-off, the team laid an intercept trap at the location.
When the three suspects arrived on the motorcycle, police personnel asked them to surrender. According to officials, instead of complying, the suspects allegedly opened fire at the police party. The team retaliated in self-defence, during which Deepak and Nitik were struck in their legs. All three — including one juvenile — were subsequently overpowered and taken into custody.
What DCP Rohini Said
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Rohini Shashank Jaiswal, speaking to reporters, confirmed that two of the arrested adults were wanted criminals, each carrying a police reward of ₹50,000.
'We had prior information because both of them were wanted criminals, each carrying a reward of ₹50,000. We received information that they were going to pass through here to commit a crime. So, we set a trap and challenged them, but they started firing at us. We retaliated in self-defence,' Jaiswal said.
The DCP added that the suspects fired approximately 11 to 12 rounds at the police team, while the personnel discharged six rounds in retaliation. He confirmed that bullets struck officers' bulletproof jackets, preventing any police casualties. The operation was led by Inspector Sandeep Godara and Manjeet, along with the rest of the Special Staff team.
Gang Links and Prior Criminal History
According to reports, all three apprehended individuals are allegedly associated with the Himanshu Bhau gang. The trio is also suspected to be linked to the killing of a property dealer named Pramod, who was reportedly shot dead outside a gym earlier this month.
Notably, both adult accused were already on police radar as wanted criminals — a detail that underscores the growing pressure on Delhi Police to neutralise organised crime networks operating in the Rohini belt. This comes amid a broader pattern of gang-related violence that has plagued northwest Delhi in recent months.
Investigation Status
An investigation into the incident is currently underway, and further details are awaited. Authorities have not yet confirmed the recovery of weapons or the exact charges to be filed against the accused. The juvenile is expected to be processed through the juvenile justice system separately.
The outcome of the probe — particularly the suspected link to the Pramod murder case — is likely to determine the next course of action for investigators.
