Why Did Assam Rifles Hand Over the Sacred Canchipur Hillock?

Imphal, Sep 3 (NationPress) In a significant act reflecting their steadfast dedication to peace and cultural awareness, the Assam Rifles officially transferred the historic Canchipur Hillock, also referred to as Langthabal Hillock, to the Art and Culture Department of the Manipur government, as reported by officials.

At the summit of this revered hill stands the Langthabal Palace complex, which once served as the power center for the former kingdom of Manipur.

A defense spokesperson stated that the palace was established in 1827 by Maharaja Gambhir Singh after liberating Manipur from Burmese rule, acting as the capital until 1844.

The site is also home to the Langthabal Temple, a centuries-old edifice dedicated to traditional Meitei deities, believed to have been supported during the reign of Maharaja Bhagyachandra Singh in the late 18th century. Although the temple is now in ruins, it continues to be a revered emblem of Manipur’s spiritual legacy, with its Mandap and sanctum still attracting quiet admiration from visitors and historians alike.

Covering an area of over 22 acres, the palace and temple complex is safeguarded under the Manipur Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1976. For more than four decades, the Assam Rifles and the Indian Army have maintained a Company Operating Base at this location, promoting regional stability and protecting this rich spiritual and cultural heritage, the spokesperson noted.

Recognizing the hillock’s profound historical and emotional importance, the Manipur government has established an alternate post on a neighboring elevation to ensure seamless security operations while facilitating the respectful transfer of the heritage site.

The spokesperson mentioned that the relocation process commenced on November 30, 2023, marked by the inauguration of new accommodations for the Assam Rifles.

Wednesday’s ceremonial handover was attended by officials and troops from the Assam Rifles along with representatives from the Art and Culture Department of the Manipur government.

The spokesperson emphasized that this event was not just an administrative achievement; it was a heartfelt tribute to the traditions, history, and identity of Manipur.

The Assam Rifles, remaining true to their motto as the “Sentinels of the North East,” reiterated their unwavering commitment to nurturing harmony and preserving the cultural tapestry of the region, he stated.

According to the official, “The Assam Rifles’ graceful withdrawal from the sacred hillock is a testament to the paramilitary forces’ respect for local heritage and their role as guardians not only of borders but also of legacies.”
