Guwahati, Nov 16 (NationPress) The state of Assam, along with its neighboring northeastern regions, has seen a significant rise in drug-related incidents over recent years, with traffickers employing increasingly sophisticated methods.
The Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, highlighted that these drug peddlers are now operating from distant locations, making the situation even more perilous.
He mentioned, "In Assam and Meghalaya, primarily drug carriers have been operating, and it is a long battle for us against them, and it will continue. However, the traffickers have been using various methods to deliver the consignments, and often they have been using drones as carriers of narcotics items," he stated recently.
According to the CM, the drug menace is extensive, necessitating awareness initiatives among school and college students who are vulnerable to falling prey to narcotics.
The Education Department in Assam has prioritized anti-drug awareness campaigns.
In Golaghat district, the Cluster Resource Centre Coordinator (CRCC), Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, informed IANS, "This year's Children's Day celebration was marked with a powerful learning experience to spread awareness campaign."
At Nahorbari M V School in Golaghat district, over 250 students and teachers participated in an anti-drug awareness session.
Kakoty added, "The session aimed to educate students about the harmful effects of substance use and empower them to make informed, healthy choices. The Children's Day programme featured poster-making activities, interactive games, and open discussions to help students understand the far-reaching consequences of drug abuse on individuals, families, and communities."
"Children's Day serves as a reminder that every child deserves a safe and healthy future. Awareness of drug abuse will enable them to make wise choices and reject habits that can jeopardize their lives," Kakoty emphasized.
Students eagerly participated, utilizing art and creativity to declare their commitment to remaining drug-free. "I realized that saying no to drugs means saying yes to my dreams and my family," shared Rahul Gogoi, a class V student.
A senior official from the Education Department mentioned that during special occasions in schools, it has been mandated to organize anti-narcotics campaigns to enlighten students about the detrimental effects of drug consumption.
