Chandigarh, Aug 14 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has declared that its district president, Harjit Singh Sandhu, will represent the party in the forthcoming Tarn Taran bypoll.
Sandhu, a successful agriculturist and owner of a brick kiln, embarked on his political journey with the Youth Akali Dal in 2007. He held the position of circle president from 2009 to 2012, progressed to the role of district general secretary until 2015, and was subsequently appointed as the state president of the Youth Akali Dal.
In 2022, after experiencing disagreements with the Akali leadership, he officially joined the BJP. Notably, Tarn Taran has a strong Panthic inclination and has historically shown limited support for the BJP.
During the 2022 Punjab assembly elections, the party's candidate, Navreet Singh Hundal, garnered only 1,176 votes from this constituency.
Although most major political parties have announced their candidates for the bypoll, the Congress and Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) have yet to make their announcements.
This bypoll was necessitated due to the passing of AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal, who previously won the seat with 52,935 votes, overcoming SAD's Harmeet Singh Sandhu.
Sandhu, a three-time MLA, subsequently joined AAP and is now their candidate for this bypoll. The Sukhbir Badal-led SAD has nominated Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa from the Azad Group, which has recently merged with the party.
BJP leaders are optimistic about the party's prospects, asserting that their cadre has strengthened over the years, and they anticipate a commendable performance from their candidate, Sandhu.
