Why Did Dileep Get Acquitted? CM Vijayan Stands Firm as Congress Disassociates from Prakash's Comments
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kannur/Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 9 (NationPress) The political ramifications following the acquittal of actor Dileep in the highly publicized case of alleged sexual assault on an actress have escalated as of Tuesday. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan emphasized that the prosecution managed the case effectively and indicated that the government would explore further legal measures after a comprehensive legal evaluation.
In a contrasting move, the Congress leadership in the State quickly distanced itself from the contentious statements made by UDF convenor and Congress MP Adoor Prakash, who had previously expressed approval of Dileep’s acquittal.
During an event hosted by the Kannur Press Club, the Chief Minister asserted that the government had provided all necessary assistance to the survivor and would continue to advocate for her.
Addressing Adoor Prakash’s comments, Vijayan pointed out that while the statement mirrored the UDF’s stance, it contradicted the prevailing public sentiment throughout Kerala.
He further characterized Prakash’s remark about filing an appeal as “peculiar” and indicated that it was inconsistent with the collective conscience of society.
Dismissing Dileep’s assertions of a broader conspiracy behind his prosecution, Vijayan stated these were merely conjectures.
“The police acted solely based on evidence,” he remarked, emphasizing that it would be inappropriate to comment on courtroom discussions at this juncture.
Meanwhile, the Congress leadership acted promptly to distance itself from Adoor Prakash’s initial remarks where he claimed justice had been served to Dileep, expressing personal satisfaction with the verdict.
KPCC president Sunny Joseph reiterated that Congress stands with the survivor and supports the government’s decision to file an appeal.
He remarked that the prosecution had not substantiated the conspiracy theory and that Prakash’s comments were his personal views and did not represent the party's official position.
“The KPCC does not endorse that statement. The Congress is firmly with the survivor,” stated Sunny Joseph, mentioning that he would engage in discussions with Prakash regarding the matter.
In a subsequent attempt at clarification, Prakash claimed his previous comments had been misinterpreted, stating he intended to convey that the survivor had not received justice and that legal recourse should continue.
However, his earlier statements have already sparked significant political backlash and embarrassment within the UDF.
As the government prepares to challenge the acquittal in the High Court, political rifts continue to widen across party lines, with the case once again taking center stage in Kerala’s public dialogue, highlighting the profound emotional, legal, and political implications for the survivor, the accused, and the State.
