Nishikant Dubey Compares Rahul Gandhi's Comments to P.C. Sorcar's Magic During Women's Reservation Debate
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 17 (NationPress) BJP MP Nishikant Dubey expressed his support for the 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam' on Friday, while taking aim at Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi for his opposition to the proposed delimitation associated with the women’s reservation bill. Dubey compared Gandhi’s speech to a P.C. Sorcar magic show.
During the Lok Sabha discussion on the bill, Dubey urged the Opposition to assist in implementing the 33 percent reservation for women as proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He emphasized that opposing the related delimitation would create unfairness for southern states, which might see a reduction in their Lok Sabha seats if the quota is applied based on the 2011 Census instead of delimitation.
Dubey voiced his disappointment regarding Rahul Gandhi's remarks during the debate, stating, “I anticipated a serious discourse from the Leader of Opposition on women’s reservation. Instead, I was left wondering if I had just witnessed a P.C. Sorcar magic show or a performance by Michael Jackson.”
He also pointed out the historical significance of April 17, recalling that it marked the day in 1987 when Rajiv Gandhi faced allegations of receiving kickbacks in the Bofors gun deal, which dominated the news headlines.
Furthermore, Dubey accused the Congress of double standards regarding OBC welfare, noting that on April 17, 1998, the then Congress president Sitaram Kesari was removed, leading to Sonia Gandhi taking over the party leadership.
He also criticized Sonia Gandhi for opposing the 2011 caste census, claiming it was unconstitutional, while recalling that former Union Minister P. Chidambaram also opposed a caste census at that time, arguing that it would divide the nation.
In response to Rahul Gandhi’s assertion that OBCs have not received their rightful share in the corporate sector under the current government, Dubey pointed out that the Tata Group is led by a minority, while Anil Agarwal from Vedanta is an OBC, and Vinod R. Tanti, owner of Suzlon Energy, belongs to a Scheduled Caste.
He warned that the Congress and other opposition parties are hindering the delimitation linked to the women’s reservation bill, and stressed that if the 2011 Census population is used as the basis for the bill's implementation, southern states will lose Lok Sabha seats while northern states will gain.
“In Uttar Pradesh, Lok Sabha seats will rise to 87, in Bihar to 47, in Maharashtra to 49, West Bengal to 38, Madhya Pradesh to 34, Rajasthan to 32, Tamil Nadu to 29, Kerala to 14, Gujarat to 28, Karnataka to 26, Andhra to 20, and Odisha to 18…” he noted.
Dubey asserted that if women’s reservation is implemented in the current 543-seat lower house based on the 2011 population, Rahul Gandhi will be accountable for the reduction in Lok Sabha seats for southern states.
Previously, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a last-minute appeal to opposition parties, urging them to support the 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam' amidst ongoing parliamentary debates.
The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026, which aims to facilitate women's reservation and enable delimitation, was passed in the Lok Sabha on Thursday after a vote.
“A discussion on amending the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam is currently underway in Parliament, and it continued until 1 a.m. last night,” PM Modi mentioned in a post on X. He added that the government has provided logical explanations to counter the “misconceptions” that have been propagated.
