Will the ECI Release Separate Lists for ‘Unmapped’ and ‘Logical Discrepancy’ Cases?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 21 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced its decision to publish two distinct lists highlighting the cases of “unmapped” and “logical discrepancy” during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal.
A recent ruling by a division bench of the Supreme Court mandated the ECI to make public the list of “logical discrepancy” cases discovered during “progeny-mapping”. However, it did not address the need for a separate list of “unmapped” voters.
Insiders from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in West Bengal stated, “In a way, the ECI is advancing the apex court’s directive by opting to release two separate lists—one for the ‘logical discrepancy’ cases as instructed by the Supreme Court and another for the ‘unmapped’ voters, which was not part of the directive.”
“Unmapped” voters are those who failed to establish any connection, either via “self mapping” or “progeny mapping”, with the voter's list from 2002, the last time such an extensive revision was undertaken in West Bengal.
Conversely, the “logical discrepancy” cases refer to instances where unusual family-tree information has been uncovered during the “progeny mapping” process.
The total number of “unmapped” voters in West Bengal stands at 31,68,426, whereas the count for “logical discrepancies” is 94,49,132. The electoral body has stated that both lists will be accessible to the public on January 25.
All pertinent lists are currently held by the district magistrate, as well as the district election officers (DEOs) and electoral registration officers (EROs).
During the hearings on claims and objections regarding the draft voters’ list, certificates and admit cards from the Madhyamik examination, managed by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE), will be accepted as valid identity documents.
Earlier today, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar directed the acting director general of the West Bengal Police, Rajeev Kumar, to adhere to the Supreme Court order to maintain a peaceful law and order situation amid the ongoing SIR in the state.
