Key Takeaways
Dhaka, March 24 (NationPress) - The Minister of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources of Bangladesh, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud, has acknowledged that the country is experiencing a disruption in its fuel supply due to an increase in consumer demand, as reported by local media on Tuesday.
During a press briefing at the Secretariat in Dhaka, Mahmud explained that the current scenario has resulted in fuel at petrol stations being depleted more rapidly than usual, according to United News of Bangladesh.
He noted, "Previously, fuel tankers would be filled in the morning, and even after a full day of sales, there would still be some left. However, due to the long lines, the fuel now runs out quickly," he stated.
When questioned about the reasons for the fuel shortage despite his earlier assurances of no scarcity, Mahmud attributed the issue to delays in supply during the early hours.
He elaborated, "Refilling tankers from depots and transporting fuel to the pumps takes time. Consequently, there is a temporary shortage in the early morning, but fuel does become available later in the day."
The minister highlighted that consumer demand has surged significantly, with daily fuel sales now being exhausted within just a few hours, as reported by UNB. He further remarked, "When demand spikes unexpectedly like this, it's natural for the fuel to run out."
Mahmud indicated that the current supply system is under strain due to the high number of individuals crowding at petrol stations.
When asked about the potential implementation of fuel rationing in Bangladesh, he replied, "I cannot comment on that at this moment." He urged citizens not to purchase fuel in excess of their needs, emphasizing that buying large quantities could further disrupt the supply chain.
In the meantime, commuters have been facing challenges as fuel shortages have been reported at numerous filling stations in Khulna city. Palash Das, a resident of Dashpara in the Boyra area, mentioned that he was unable to obtain fuel for his motorcycle after visiting four different stations, according to The Daily Star.
