Khan is currently receiving treatment at a hospital, and authorities recovered a pistol and a motorcycle from his possession.
Deepak Gupta, who was pursuing a medical career, was reportedly murdered by cattle smugglers in Gorakhpur on Monday, with Rahim Khan identified as one of the key perpetrators.
According to Gorakhpur SSP Raj Karan Nayyar, four suspects have been arrested to date, while two remain at large.
Nayyar noted that Khan fired upon being cornered by law enforcement, compelling them to respond, which resulted in his injuries. Two other suspects, Chhotu and Raju, are currently under investigation.
The police have announced a reward for the identified absconding suspects, and five specialized teams are actively conducting raids to apprehend them.
Family members of the victim have staged protests demanding justice.
Reacting to the encounter, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav criticized the government, questioning its record on law and order.
“Before 2022, a businessman from Kanpur died in police custody, and now a young student aspiring to be a doctor has been murdered in Gorakhpur. What was the police doing in the Chief Minister’s home district during such a significant cattle smuggling case? Why was an encounter necessary?” he questioned.
Yadav described the encounter as “pre-planned,” claiming, “When a senior officer visited Gorakhpur, it was decided then. It didn’t just happen that night; the encounter took place while our press conference was ongoing.”
The SP leader asserted that “encounters will not enhance law and order; it will only improve with opportunities for competent officers, not by assigning police stations based on caste.” He accused the government of utilizing encounters to “conceal its failures” and alleged connections between those involved in cow slaughter and the BJP, suggesting that the administration was “complicit in the Gorakhpur incident.”
