The Governor highlighted that Naib Subedar Kulwant Singh from the 908 Field Regiment, part of the 56 Artillery Brigade, and Naik Pradeep Kumar Sharma of the 18 Sikh Regiment made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their nation.
In a statement from Lok Bhavan, he offered heartfelt tributes to their bravery, dedication, and steadfast commitment to protecting our borders.
“I stand with the people of Arunachal Pradesh and the entire nation in extending our deepest condolences to the grieving families. We seek the Almighty's blessings for eternal peace for the departed souls and strength to their loved ones during this sorrowful time,” the Governor remarked.
In a related event, a solemn wreath-laying ceremony took place under the auspices of the Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (South) in Sehlon, Chandel district, Manipur, to honor the supreme sacrifices made by Lance Naik (Late) Khim Bahadur Thapa, Lance Naik (Late) Bhola Dutt Chhetri, and Lance Naik (Late) Padam Bahadur Sunar.
These courageous soldiers exhibited remarkable valor and commitment during fierce counter-insurgency operations in Aizawl, Mizoram, in March 1966.
On February 27, 1966, insurgents from the Mizo National Front launched a brutal attack on all bases and the Battalion Headquarters of 1 Assam Rifles. The relentless assault continued for twelve days.
Against overwhelming odds, the three heroic soldiers stood resolutely, defending their post with unmatched spirit. Despite suffering severe injuries, they continued to engage in battle with extraordinary gallantry.
Lance Naik Khim Bahadur Thapa succumbed to his injuries on March 5, 1966, followed by Lance Naik Bhola Dutt Chhetri on March 7, 1966, and Lance Naik Padam Bahadur Sunar on March 11, 1966. Their sacrifices remain a testament to valor and selfless service.
Another wreath-laying ceremony was conducted at the Veng Battalion Headquarters in Churachandpur district, Manipur, to pay tribute to the ultimate sacrifice of Subedar Sarwan Kumar. This valiant soldier lost his life on March 10, 2009, while bravely combating insurgents at Haijang village in Kangpokpi district.
