New Delhi, Dec 1 (NationPress) The government has launched the Global Indices for Reforms and Growth (GIRG) initiative to track the advancement of 26 selected Global Indices through inter-ministerial collaboration aimed at fostering reforms and growth within the nation, the Parliament was informed on Monday.
The Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Rao Inderjit Singh, shared with the Rajya Sabha that the Ministry diligently compiles various indices, including estimates for Gross Domestic Product (GDP), monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI), and monthly Index of Industrial Production (IIP) in alignment with international standards.
“The base years for these indices are revised regularly to integrate advancements in methodology according to international guidelines and to capture significant structural changes over time, utilizing the latest available data sets,” he explained.
The 26 essential Global Indices are disseminated by 16 international organizations, covering four major themes: economy, development, governance, and industry.
The Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO), part of NITI Aayog, acts as the knowledge partner and primary coordinator for this initiative.
“Under the GIRG framework, 26 chosen indices are assigned to 17 nodal ministries, which hold specific responsibilities to drive improvements,” stated the minister.
Importantly, these nodal ministries are tasked with conducting comprehensive reviews of the index methodologies and actively engaging with the relevant publishing agencies and international bodies, ensuring that the latest official Indian data sources are utilized in calculating these indices.
The minister further revealed that nodal and line ministries are required to pinpoint performance gaps and execute necessary remedial measures and policy reforms to address underlying issues, thus fostering tangible improvements in India’s global standing.
In addition, the ‘GoIStats’ mobile application has been created to offer users convenient access to official statistical data produced by the ministry.
