Gujarat Government Forms Committee to Safeguard LNG and LPG Supplies Amid Global Crisis
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Gandhinagar, March 11 (NationPress) In light of global energy market disruptions due to ongoing conflicts in West Asia, the Gujarat government has established a high-level committee aimed at securing liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies, as announced by Spokesperson Minister Jitu Vaghani on Wednesday.
The committee, led by Chief Secretary M.K. Das, will oversee LNG availability and work in coordination with central authorities to ensure that households have a steady supply of gas.
“Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the panel will conduct ongoing assessments to ensure a robust supply,” Vaghani stated.
He reassured the public that domestic LPG cylinders will remain unaffected. “We have ample stocks of LPG, CNG, petrol, and diesel. I urge citizens not to fall prey to rumors,” he added.
According to Vaghani, industries are projected to receive about 80% of their regular gas supply. “Our goal is to prevent price increases and ensure consumer convenience,” he emphasized.
The minister also warned against black marketing, asserting that strict measures will be taken against illegal stockpiling. “If necessary, both the central and state governments will secure gas and fuel even at elevated costs,” he remarked.
State Energy and Petrochemicals Minister Rushikesh Patel pointed out that the ongoing conflicts in Iran and Israel have temporarily disrupted gas shipments through critical routes, leading to supply challenges.
“We have made alternative arrangements to ensure continuity of supply,” he confirmed.
India’s energy sector has experienced fluctuations, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global chokepoint.
Officials at both state and central levels have prioritized household piped natural gas (PNG), CNG, and LPG for domestic cooking over industrial usage wherever feasible.
The Gujarat committee will focus on maintaining stable household supplies as alternative cargoes and energy sources are arranged.
At the national level, refiners are being instructed to maximize LPG production and adjust allocations, with rationing measures being considered to balance supplies across priority sectors.
