Gandhinagar, Sep 25 (NationPress) What started as a regional initiative in Gujarat in 2009 has blossomed into a nationwide movement. The Gujarat Skill Development Mission, initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his time as Chief Minister of Gujarat, has paved the way for what is now recognized as the Skill India Mission—a groundbreaking national programme that has empowered over 60 million youth throughout the country.

The mission's goal was to synchronize youth skills with market requirements, offering vocational and technical training statewide. Under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the Gujarat government continues to train educated yet unemployed youth, equipping them with the skills needed to thrive in a swiftly changing job market.

Neel Nai, a trainee from Surat, expressed: "This initiative by the Gujarat government is significantly contributing to making a vast number of youth self-sufficient."

K.J. Rathod, Director of Skill Development in Gandhinagar, remarked: "After assuming the role of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi expanded this mission to the national level and launched the Skill India Mission on July 15, 2015, coinciding with World Youth Skills Day. He envisioned it as a programme aimed at infusing new vigor into the nation and economically empowering youth."

In the past decade, the Central government has been vigorously implementing the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) as a key aspect of the Skill India Mission. This programme offers training in approximately 40 sectors, ensuring that youth acquire skills that align with industry and market requirements, ultimately creating pathways to both employment and self-employment opportunities.

What began as a small initiative in Gujarat has evolved into a robust source of opportunity across India. Today, these empowered youth are essential in realizing the vision of a developed India.

The 10th Anniversary of the Skill India Mission was recently commemorated in July 2025. PM Modi inaugurated this mission in 2015 to equip youth with industry-relevant skills for employment, entrepreneurship, and sustainable livelihoods.
