Intense Gunfight Unfolds in Ganderbal, J&K: Two Terrorists Engaged
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Srinagar, March 31 (NationPress) A fierce gunfight erupted on Tuesday evening in J&K’s Ganderbal district as security forces encircled a village based on specific intelligence reports regarding terrorists in the area, according to officials.
Sources revealed to IANS that joint forces, comprising the army, J&K Police, and CRPF, initiated a cordon around Arhama village after receiving credible intelligence about the presence of terrorists.
As the security personnel advanced towards the suspected militants—estimated to be two in number—the militants retaliated with gunfire, resulting in an ongoing encounter.
"All escape routes for the terrorists have been sealed off. It is believed that two militants are concealed within the village, and they are currently engaged in a persistent gunfight," stated a source.
Notably, Ganderbal district in northern Kashmir has typically been free from terrorist activities, making this encounter a significant concern for law enforcement.
On October 20, 2024, a tragic attack by terrorists targeted a worker's camp in the Gagangir area of Ganderbal, near the Sonamarg Z-Morh tunnel construction site, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals—including six non-local laborers and a local doctor—along with several injuries.
This attack specifically targeted personnel involved in the crucial Z-Morh tunnel project and occurred in the evening as workers returned to their camp.
On April 22, 2025, LeT terrorists claimed the lives of 25 civilians, including 24 tourists and a local pony owner, in the picturesque Baisaran meadow of Pahalgam.
The National Investigation Agency and local police later released images of the suspects derived from CCTV footage.
All three LeT terrorists, who were Pakistani nationals involved in the October 2024 ambush at the Sonamarg (Gagangir) tunnel site and the Pahalgam killings, were neutralized by security forces during a subsequent operation on July 28, 2025. This operation, code-named Operation Mahadev, was a collaborative effort by the Indian Army, CRPF, and J&K Police.
Authorities confirmed that the three terrorists, linked to the attacks on Pahalgam and Sonamarg, were eliminated at the base of the Mahadev mountain peak in Srinagar.
