New Delhi, Nov 21 (NationPress) India is experiencing the most significant surge in foodgrain production within the past decade. From 251.54 million tonnes in 2015-16, production has escalated by 106 million tonnes to reach 357.73 million tonnes in 2024-25, as per the latest government figures.
The Union Agriculture Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, stated that rice production has achieved an unprecedented level of 1,501.84 lakh tonnes, marking an increase of 123.59 lakh tonnes over last year's 1,378.25 lakh tonnes.
Wheat has also shown remarkable growth, soaring to 1,179.45 lakh tonnes, which is 46.53 lakh tonnes more than last year's 1,132.92 lakh tonnes.
Production of moong has risen to 42.44 lakh tonnes, soybean to 152.68 lakh tonnes, and groundnut to 119.42 lakh tonnes.
Estimates for maize and ‘Shri Anna’ (millet) show outputs of 434.09 lakh tonnes and 185.92 lakh tonnes, respectively, compared to 376.65 lakh tonnes and 175.72 lakh tonnes last year, as per the minister's report.
“This illustrates the swift advancement in the agriculture sector under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he remarked.
The total oilseed production for 2024-25 is projected at a historic 429.89 lakh tonnes, which is 33.20 lakh tonnes more than the 396.69 lakh tonnes produced in 2023-24.
This surge is fueled by record outputs of groundnut and soybean, projected at 119.42 lakh tonnes and 152.68 lakh tonnes, respectively, reflecting increases of 17.62 lakh tonnes and 22.06 lakh tonnes over last year's 101.80 lakh tonnes and 130.62 lakh tonnes. The rapeseed and mustard output is estimated at 126.67 lakh tonnes.
The Agriculture Minister also engaged with senior officials regarding future strategies, expressing confidence that the ‘Self-Reliance in Pulses Mission’, initiated under PM Modi’s leadership, will significantly boost pulse production.
Chouhan emphasized that the government’s various agricultural welfare initiatives will continue to produce similar positive results in foodgrain production. He assured that MSP procurement for tur, urad, chana, and moong is greatly benefiting numerous farmers nationwide.
