Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 9 (NationPress) In a significant move, Indonesia has formalized a contract with India to procure the BrahMos missile system, as confirmed by Defence Ministry spokesperson Rico Ricardo Sirait on Monday.
Rico informed Reuters that this arrangement is a crucial component of Indonesia's initiative to enhance its military hardware and fortify its defence capabilities, particularly within the maritime domain.
The BrahMos missile, co-developed by India and Russia, has been in extensive talks with Indonesia regarding its sale. This agreement comes after lengthy negotiations that intensified during high-profile visits, notably discussions at the India-Indonesia Defence Ministers' Dialogue in 2025.
With this deal, Jakarta becomes the second international purchaser of the supersonic cruise missile, following the Philippines. In January 2022, Manila finalized a contract worth $375 million for three shore-based BrahMos anti-ship batteries, with the first deliveries scheduled for 2024. Philippine military leaders have labeled the system a transformative addition and have shown interest in further acquisitions. This deal also sparked broader interest in the missile throughout the region.
BrahMos manufactures supersonic cruise missiles capable of being launched from submarines, ships, aircraft, or land platforms. It is among the key armaments of the Indian armed forces, utilized by the army, navy, and air force.
During the four-day conflict of Operation Sindoor, the missile was effectively deployed in strikes against Pakistani air bases and military facilities.
The Indian Defence Ministry has approved a substantial order for more BrahMos systems for the navy's warships and additional ground- and air-launched variants for the air force, following the success seen in Operation Sindoor.
The Indian Navy is set to equip its Veer-class warships with these missiles, while the Air Force integrates them into its Su-30MKI fleet.
This missile boasts advanced guidance and control systems, ensuring high-velocity flight stability and exceptional terminal accuracy.
