Is KP CM Afridi's Position Under Threat Due to 'Release Imran Khan Force'?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Islamabad, Feb 21 (NationPress) Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has issued a warning regarding the precarious position of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, labeling his recently declared 'Release Imran Khan Force' as both unconstitutional and illegal, according to local media reports.
Asif remarked, "The KP chief minister has announced this force to safeguard his position. Other than the federal government, no entity possesses the authority to establish any force," as reported by the leading Pakistani media outlet Geo News.
The Defence Minister refuted any claims about discussions concerning the transfer of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Imran Khan to another location or to his residence in Bani Gala, Islamabad.
He commented, "There may have been inquiries regarding certain privileges," emphasizing that "some individuals attempt to maintain their influence through such narratives".
Asif's comments came in response to CM Afridi's announcement of the force aimed at facilitating the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been incarcerated since August 2023.
This announcement was made on February 18, following the withdrawal of PTI lawmakers and members of the opposition alliance, Tehreek Tahaffuz-e-Aiyeen Pakistan (TTAP), from their extended sit-in at the Parliament House in Islamabad.
In a press conference held outside the Supreme Court, CM Afridi stated that the imprisoned PTI founder had tasked him with leading a 'street movement'.
He accused authorities of discarding court orders and claimed that Imran continues to be denied access to his personal medical professionals, as reported by Geo News.
Afridi further revealed that the new force would be officially registered and would pursue a peaceful approach, noting that members would take an oath in Peshawar after Eid al-Fitr.
He asserted that the force would operate under a defined command structure, with Imran Khan determining who would take on leadership roles.
Afridi also mentioned that preparations for launching the initiative would be concluded soon, emphasizing that the movement would champion the supremacy of the Constitution, democracy, and an independent media.
The former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been in custody since August 2023, following his arrest at his Lahore home after a corruption conviction.
Currently, he is held at the high-security Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
