Kolkata, March 13 (NationPress) – On Friday, the Kolkata Police issued a warning to the public regarding potential online forgery, exploiting the current situation in West Asia and its anticipated effects on gas provisions.
A high-ranking officer from the city's cybercrime unit indicated that there have already been reports of residents receiving suspicious phone calls, SMS messages, or WhatsApp communications in this regard.
In these incidents, the fraudsters impersonate Central government officials, claiming they are conducting a survey on gas usage. They inform the consumers that they have booked gas within 25 days of their last booking, which violates regulations. The consumer is then threatened with punishment for this supposed infraction,” the officer elaborated.
He added that those who fall prey to panic and seek guidance on how to handle this supposed threat are then directed by the fraudster to click on a link and complete an online form.
“Once the consumer clicks the link, the fraudster gains control over all the mobile data of the individual. The next step involves draining funds from their bank accounts,” the cybercrime official explained.
Additionally, there is another tactic being employed by these scammers. “In this scenario, the consumer is informed that they have won a lottery for an LPG cylinder delivery to their home within two days of booking. Enticed by this false offer, the consumer is asked to fill out a form via a link sent through WhatsApp or another medium,” he continued.
The officer advised that anyone receiving such dubious calls or messages should disregard them entirely and report them to their local police station.
“Under no circumstances should anyone click on unfamiliar links or disclose personal or banking details. The cyber units across various police stations in the city have been notified, and the public is urged to remain vigilant,” the official concluded.
