Bhopal, March 31 (NationPress) The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Opposition Congress in Madhya Pradesh are embroiled in a verbal clash over the state's decision to change the dates for wheat procurement at the Minimum Support Price (MSP).
On Monday, the state government unveiled a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), announcing that procurement in the divisions of Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, and Narmadapuram will commence on April 10, instead of the previously scheduled April 7.
Likewise, procurement in Jabalpur, Gwalior, Rewa, Shahdol, Chambal, and Sagar divisions, which was slated to begin on April 7, will now kick off a week later, starting April 15.
This is the second rescheduling by the state government; the original procurement was set for March 16 but was postponed to April 1.
Congress leaders have criticized the BJP government's decision, claiming that the procurement delays have caused significant distress among farmers, compelling them to sell their crops at reduced market rates.
In a recent statement, state Congress president Jitu Patwari mentioned that many farmers are facing difficulties in repaying loans taken for agricultural activities.
He further claimed that the ongoing delays are pushing farmers to sell their crops at diminished prices to settle loans before March 31.
“Post-March 31, around 40% of farmers could default. The government keeps altering procurement dates, which is forcing farmers to part with their crops below the MSP,” he stated.
In response, Jaipal Singh Chavda, head of the BJP Kisan Morcha, accused the Congress of never genuinely supporting farmers.
During a media briefing in Bhopal, he pointed out that the ongoing conflict in West Asia has resulted in a shortage of polymers essential for producing polypropylene (PP) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) bags used for grain packaging.
He disclosed that the Centre has provided an additional 50,000 bales of jute bags to Madhya Pradesh.
“The BJP government is dedicated to procuring every grain of wheat from farmers at Rs 2,625 per quintal,” he assured.
