Rameswaram (Tamil Nadu), April 5 (NationPress) A groundbreaking infrastructure initiative, the new Pamban Bridge, linking Rameswaram to the Indian mainland, has significantly improved the transportation network while enhancing the region's cultural and spiritual importance. Scheduled to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, during the Ram Navami festival, this bridge is set to elevate Rameswaram into a prominent destination for both pilgrims and tourists.

Furthermore, it will bolster the local economy and generate new job opportunities for residents.

The new Pamban Bridge is a feat of contemporary engineering, extending over 2.078 km with 100 spans and a vertical lift span reaching 72.5 metres. This height surpasses that of the previous bridge by three metres, ensuring unobstructed passage for larger vessels.

Constructed using 333 piles in its substructure and employing advanced anti-corrosion technologies like polysiloxane paint, stainless steel, and fibre-reinforced plastic, the bridge is built for durability, guaranteeing safe and sustainable railway and marine operations for decades to come.

Initiated in 2019, the project has been completed within five years—significantly ahead of the usual timeline for such complex initiatives.

This rapid completion reflects the Prime Minister’s determined vision to expedite significant infrastructure projects and ensure their timely execution.

“When the Prime Minister lays the foundation stone for a project, he ensures its completion. This bridge exemplifies his leadership and dedication to national progress,” stated Executive Director of Information & Publicity, Railway Board, Dilip Kumar.

In an interview with IANS just hours before the bridge's launch, Dilip Kumar discussed the project's significance.

“Rameswaram is a sacred land deeply tied to the Ramayana era. When Lord Rama arrived here in search of Mata Sita, it was determined that a bridge would connect Rameswaram to Lanka, enabling Lord Rama's army to cross over. Prior to this mission, Lord Rama prayed to Lord Shiva on the holy ground of Rameswaram, leading to the establishment of the Ramanathswamy Temple, which holds great spiritual significance for millions of Indians.

“Every Indian aspires to visit Rameswaram Dham, one of the four sacred pilgrimage sites in India, at least once in their lifetime. The establishment of railway connectivity greatly enhances convenience for the public. Hence, the construction of the new bridge was deemed essential,” he added.

“The previous bridge, which had been out of service for over two decades due to safety issues, is now replaced by the new bridge, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate to the nation,” Kumar informed IANS.

“The new bridge spans 2.078 km, features 100 spans, and employs around 300 piles. With these technical specifications, it is designed to be three meters taller than the old bridge. The bridge also boasts a vertical lift span of 72.5 metres, which can be raised to a height of 17 meters, allowing for the passage of large vessels beneath it,” he explained.

Dilip Kumar further stated: “This bridge is significant for all of us. Every major project faces challenges, yet our technicians, architects, and engineers have successfully navigated these obstacles to complete the bridge on schedule. They truly deserve accolades. This bridge is a point of pride, and everyone should traverse it to witness the remarkable achievements of our nation.”

The bridge will not only facilitate smooth travel for pilgrims but will also stimulate economic growth in the region. As connectivity improves, the tourism industry is expected to thrive, leading to increased local business activities.

Moreover, employment opportunities for the residents of Rameswaram will experience a marked enhancement.
