Poonch, March 26 (NationPress) The Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana (PMAY-G) has significantly transformed the lives of impoverished families in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, with 46,800 homes constructed to date under this initiative.
Beneficiaries, who previously resided in fragile mud structures, now express their gratitude for their new solid homes, made possible through the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Central government's emphasis on rural development.
In regions like Noorkot, located near the Line of Control (LoC), over fifty concrete homes have been erected, providing relief to families who once endured leaking roofs and restless nights during the rainy season. Many of these families now enjoy secure, permanent residences, a transformation they once thought was unattainable.
Assistant Commissioner of Development, Shafiq Ahmed, noted that the goal for this year’s PMAY-G initiative in Poonch was to build 49,200 houses. To date, 46,800 homes have been completed, with the remaining structures expected to be finalized in the coming week.
IANS interviewed several beneficiaries who shared their heartfelt stories.
Zainab Kors, one of the beneficiaries, remarked: "We received this house through the PMAY-G scheme. Previously, we encountered numerous challenges with our mud house, particularly during rain. Now, thanks to the Central government's support, we have a pucca house. This is a true blessing for the poor."
Wahid Khan, another beneficiary, stated: "We once lived in a mud house, but with this scheme, we now have a concrete home. I want to express my gratitude to PM Modi because we didn’t have a proper home before. We are genuinely happy."
Mohammad Sharif said: "We received more than Rs 1 lakh in aid, changing our lives. I can now sleep soundly at night, which I couldn't do before due to our house's poor condition. Thank you, PM Modi, for your efforts for the underprivileged."
Wali Mohammad also shared his appreciation, stating, "The old mud house caused many issues for us. Now, thanks to PMAY-G, we have a proper house. I hope the government continues to implement more such initiatives."
PMAY-G, a flagship housing program initiated by the Central government, aims to provide permanent housing solutions for rural citizens living in kutcha homes or lacking roofs. Beneficiaries in plain areas receive Rs 1.20 lakh, while those in hilly or challenging regions, such as Jammu and Kashmir, are granted Rs 1.30 lakh to construct their homes.
The PMAY-G initiative has proven to be a lifeline for many families in rural India, drastically improving their living conditions and ensuring they have a safe, secure place to call home.
