Over 60 to 71 Percent Completion of National Waterways 1 & 2 Projects: Sonowal

New Delhi, Dec 6 (NationPress) The development efforts on the National Waterways are making significant headway, with more than 61 percent of both physical and financial milestones achieved in the ongoing projects for National Waterway 1 (NW-1) along the Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly River System (from Haldia to Allahabad). In addition, over 71 percent of the work on NW-2, which spans the Brahmaputra River (from Dhubri to Sadiya), has been finalized, as stated by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal during a Lok Sabha session on Friday.
Regarding the NW-1 Jal Marg Vikas Project, key elements include the construction of Multi-modal Terminals at Varanasi, Sahibganj, and Haldia, as well as the establishment of a new Navigational Lock at Farakka, modernization efforts for the old lock gate at Farakka, development of the Kalughat Intermodal Terminal, and enhancements in fairway navigation, achieving a physical progress of 61.79 percent and a financial progress of 61.57 percent, as per the Minister's written response.
Likewise, in the thorough development of NW-2, a commendable 71.23 percent of both physical and financial progress has been realized.
This project includes critical components such as the construction of the Bogibeel cargo terminal, a terminal at Jogighopa, improvement of the access road from Pandu Port Terminal to NH-27, and the establishment of a Ship Repair Facility at Pandu, Guwahati (in Assam), along with fairway development, he elaborated.
For the comprehensive development of NW-16 and the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route, about 16.39 percent of the work has been executed.
Key components include the construction of a terminal at Sonamura on the Gumti river, upgrades to Badarpur and Karimganj Terminals, building of an office structure and residential complex with a boundary wall in Silchar, alongside acquiring an amphibian dredger and survey vessel, and fairway development, the Minister mentioned.
In addition, progress has been made on another 23 National Waterways (including NW-3, NW-4, NW-5 and 16 new waterways), achieving 47.84 percent completion for shipping and navigation purposes.
This includes NW-3, which covers the West Coast Canal (from Kottapuram to Kollam), Champakara and Udyogmandal Canals, NW-4 on the Krishna River (from Vijayawada to Muktyala), NW-5 connecting Dhamra-Paradip via Mangalagadi to Pankopal, NW-8 on the Alappuzha-Changanassery Canal, and NW-27 on the Cumberjua River (from Cortalim-Ferry to Sao Martias Vidhan Parisad), among others.
