Does Punjab Police Have Authority Over Delhi Assembly Matters? Virendra Sachdeva on FIR Against Kapil Mishra
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, January 10 (NationPress) Following the registration of an FIR against Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra by the Punjab Police, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva remarked on Saturday that since the occurrence took place within the Delhi Assembly, the Punjab Police lacks jurisdiction in this case.
In an interview with IANS, Sachdeva expressed, “What astonishes me is that the incident transpired inside the Vidhan Sabha, where the Leader of Opposition, Atishi Marlena, made a disparaging comment regarding Sikh Gurus. In this regard, neither the Punjab government nor the Punjab Police holds any authority.”
He further noted that the Aam Aadmi Party's concern became apparent after the remark, as Atishi was absent from the Delhi Assembly.
“Any events that occur within the Assembly are under the Speaker's jurisdiction. The AAP leaders are calling for a forensic investigation, which arouses suspicion. This is why figures like Bhagwant Mann and Atishi seem to be apprehensive,” he added.
Sachdeva emphasized that neither Kapil Mishra nor any BJP MLA would be intimidated.
“It is widely recognized that Atishi made a profoundly disrespectful comment. The people of both Punjab and Delhi will not tolerate any affront to their Gurus,” he stated.
Meanwhile, on Friday, a spokesperson for the Jalandhar Police Commissionerate announced that an FIR had been filed based on a complaint from Iqbal Singh regarding the dissemination of an altered and manipulated video of former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi.
Numerous social media posts featuring a brief video clip allegedly depicting Atishi, the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, making derogatory and blasphemous statements against Sikh Gurus with inflammatory captions have circulated on various platforms.
The Jalandhar Police Commissionerate spokesperson also mentioned that investigations have been conducted methodically and the audio clip featuring Atishi was extracted from the social media account of Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra and sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory Director in Mohali for analysis.
The forensic report dated January 9 revealed that the term 'Guru' was not spoken by Atishi in the audio contained in the circulated video.
Moreover, the video has been deliberately altered to falsely attribute words to the Delhi LoP that were never articulated.
BJP MLAs protested on Wednesday, chanting slogans in the Delhi Assembly against Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi over her alleged use of ‘insensitive language’ regarding a Sikh Guru during a recent Assembly session.
