New Delhi, Jan 1 (NationPress) On the milestone of the 68th Foundation Day of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed warm greetings to the scientists and staff, acknowledging their steadfast dedication, scientific excellence, and profound sense of national responsibility.

The DRDO is celebrating its 68th Foundation Day today, having been established in 1958 to bolster India’s capabilities and foster self-reliance in the domains of science and technology, particularly within the defence sector.

In a statement on X, the Defence Minister remarked, "On this DRDO Day, I convey my sincere greetings to all the scientists, personnel, and their families at DRDO. Their unyielding commitment, scientific excellence, and national duty are crucial for fortifying India's defence readiness and promoting Atmanirbhar Bharat in defence."

He further stated, "By creating homegrown, future-oriented technologies, the DRDO enhances our strategic independence and boosts the morale of our armed forces. I wish the entire DRDO family a year filled with significant advancements and ongoing service to the nation," Singh concluded.

Founded in 1958 through the integration of the Technical Development Establishment and the Directorate of Technical Development and Production of the Indian Ordnance Factories, along with the Defence Science Organisation, the DRDO was established under Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

In 1979, the Defence Research and Development Service (DRDS) was formed as a service of Group ‘A’ officers and scientists, operating directly under the Ministry of Defence's oversight.

With an extensive network of 52 laboratories, the DRDO is involved in the development of defence technologies across various pivotal sectors, such as aeronautics, armaments, electronics, land combat engineering, life sciences, materials, missiles, and naval systems.

Today, it stands as the largest and most diverse research organization within India’s defence sector.
