Key Takeaways
Jammu, April 12 (NationPress) The Chairperson of the Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board, Syed Darakhshan Andrabi, described the Women's Reservation Bill as a long-overdue necessity on Sunday. She urged all political factions, including the Opposition, to unite for the bill's seamless passage in the upcoming special session of Parliament.
In an interview with IANS in Jammu, Andrabi commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his support of the Women's Reservation Bill.
She pointed out that during elections, all political entities seek women's votes; however, Prime Minister Modi has gone further by facilitating their involvement in governance.
Andrabi noted that women's participation has already been evident in Panchayat and District Development Council (DDC) elections.
She expressed optimism that women's representation will soon be assured in both Parliament and State Assemblies.
She congratulated Prime Minister Modi for this monumental initiative, calling his vision a source of inspiration for the world.
Andrabi highlighted that the call for women's reservation has been unmet for many years, indicating that the nation had to wait almost 75 years for such a groundbreaking move.
She emphasized the upcoming three-day special session of Parliament, scheduled from April 16 to 18, as a pivotal moment to foster political consensus and enact this significant reform.
Pointing to the changes in governance since 2014, Andrabi stated that women across India have increasingly felt their rights being acknowledged and upheld.
She attributed the strides towards greater inclusion of women in governance to Prime Minister Modi, describing the Bill as a "historic and transformative" step.
Andrabi remarked, "Women are no longer just voters; they are now actively participating in governance," stressing that the focus has shifted from mere electoral involvement to substantial representation in decision-making processes.
She expressed confidence that the Bill's provisions would be effectively implemented by 2029, resulting in a significant rise in women's political engagement.
Highlighting the importance of unity, Andrabi called on opposition parties to set aside their differences and endorse the legislation during the forthcoming special parliamentary session.
"The nation has waited long enough. Now is the moment to act," concluded the Chairperson of the Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board.
