Agartala, April 13 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Tripura, Jitendra Chaudhury, has made a request to Chief Minister Manik Saha to reinstate the statue of the prominent communist leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Baidyanath Majumder at its original location in Kailashahar, following the installation of an idol of Lord Ram in its place.
This appeal from the LoP, who also serves as the CPI-M’s Tripura state Secretary, comes just two days after unknown individuals placed the idol of Lord Ram at the same cement structure where the statue of Baidyanath Majumder once stood before it was demolished in March 2018, following the BJP's rise to power in the state.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, the LoP, who is a member of the CPI-M politburo, highlighted that the idol of Lord Ram occupies the exact spot where the statue of the former Deputy Chief Minister was located before it was dismantled and discarded into the Manu River post the 2018 Assembly elections.
“The previous Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb had also denounced this despicable act and promised to restore the statue, yet he failed to follow through on his pledge,” stated the LoP.
He remarked: “Like the citizens from all walks of life in the state, you too may feel dismayed by the placement of the idol of Lord Ram in lieu of the statue of the communist leader. This act contradicts the essence of Tripura’s rich tradition and culture.”
The LoP has urged the Chief Minister to either relocate the idol of Lord Ram to an appropriate location or temple and to restore the statue of the Left leader with the respect it deserves.
“Baidyanath Majumder, a revered communist leader, dedicated his life to the people’s cause and was imprisoned during the British rule,” the LoP emphasized.
In a counterstatement, BJP's Unakoti district President Bimal Kar vehemently refuted any claims of involvement by party members in the installation of the idol of Lord Ram at the site where the statue of the esteemed communist leader was previously located.
The installation of the idol of Lord Ram coincides with the CPI-M’s initiative to commission a new statue of Majumder to honor his legacy.
The statue of the former Deputy Chief Minister was initially erected at the same location in Kailashahar in 2012.
